Mistborn 2: The Well of Ascension

The second Mistborn book did start off kind of slow but there were a lot of great character moments and the developments from this book definitely helped develop the world in such an interesting way.

Vin and Elend have to deal with the repercussions of their actions in this book. Now with Elend at the helm, they have to steer the nation towards success, despite Elend’s father attempting to take the city for himself. The looming armies outside of Luthadel keep our heroes on their toes as well as the threat of a mysterious figure in the night.

Vin is emotionally damaged from losing Kelsier and must find her own purpose. She starts to feel a well of immense power but can’t seem to pinpoint it. All she wants is to keep Elend and the city safe and the weight of this can be felt through her actions. She does some questionable things with questionable company and struggles to figure out who she truly is. With no mentor, she has to decide what she wants and this book delves deep into her issues with such realistic, relatable subject matter that you will understand why she does what she does.

The revelations in this book do well to further the plot. Sazed gets a romantic interest and the Kandra are more spoken of. Koloss are introduced and more information is learned about Feruchemy and its history. The Lord Ruler’s origins are explored further and lore about his initial take over is uncovered. These plot points are revealed in ways that feel natural to the narrative as the scholarly Terris people look into the history and the humans that act on gut feelings, follow their hearts and instincts.

This trilogy is shaping up to be really sick, so I hope the final book is able to wrap it up nicely. I hope Vin and Elend find happiness and Sazed regains his faith and everyone lives happily ever after, because I love them all immensely.
