Jazzpunk

There’s a lot of randomness to Jazzpunk. You’re essentially a secret agent that does missions for an eccentric boss. The missions are generic spy missions like gather intel, steal the thing, and rescue the hostage. What makes this game stand out is the humor. Absurd minigames and clickable objects make this game an off-the-wall experience. There’s not much substance here, but it’s a solid, concise experience that’ll most likely make you chuckle.

I hate to spoil too many of the gags as that’s the entire point of the game, but here are just a few. In one of the story beats you have to poison a cowboy’s sushi to steal his artificial lung. You can spray pheromones to cause cybernetic bird drones to attack people. There’s a minigame where you fight pizza zombies in a pizza textured world. Also, there’s a talking pie, wearing a beret and playing a saxophone that’s seen in multiple areas. Many of these gags are part of the main questline, but some you have to look for in the areas you travel to. It’s interesting to explore each level, just for some extra laughs, however if you’re looking for more than laughs, you’re playing the wrong game.

This game is quite short, even if you explore the areas a bit. I went on an entire time traveling adventure in one world and still clocked in at barely 2 hours when I completed the game. Despite some chuckle worthy gags and a couple mouth agape moments, I can’t say the experience was too memorable. This type of comedy resonates with a very specific crowd and I’m not really in that group. I will say that it has a lot of heart and references that I quickly understood, but it failed to leave a real impact on me. If you’re a fan of absurd humor, this is the one for you. It’s also pretty short, so what have you got to lose?
